Leo Cussen Centre for Law has a long history of making international students welcome, ensuring a productive and enjoyable experience.
You are eligible to apply for any course mode depending on your visa conditions.
If you are on a student visa and have graduated in law from an approved Australian university, you are eligible for the Face-to-Face Practical Legal Training at Leo Cussen.
If you are on a student visa, you may be able to study the Blended or 100% Online course if –
- you are in your final semester of your law degree (provided you have completed all ‘Priestley 11’ subjects and have no more than 2 electives left to complete); or
- you have recently completed your law degree (depending on the timing of your completion, and the time remaining on your student visa).
If you are on a bridging visa or other temporary residence visa with no restrictions on study, then you may study the Blended or 100% Online course. It depends on the conditions of your visa and you should check this with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

I have completed my law degree in Australia, am I eligible for the PLT?
Yes. You are eligible to apply for any course depending on your visa conditions.
The Leo Cussen Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is a CRICOS approved course with provider number 02224A.

Will Leo Cussen help find my Professional Placement?
Yes. Leo Cussen provides placement support to international students through a dedicated staff member. In our onsite course (in Melbourne), we will find your placement for you. In our courses, we provide extensive support and guidance to help you secure a placement.

Can I study the Blended or 100% Online course?
Yes.
If you are on a student visa, you may be able to study the Blended or 100% Online course if –
- you are in your final semester of your law degree (provided you have completed all ‘Priestley 11’ subjects and have no more than 2 electives left to complete); or
- you have recently completed your law degree (depending on the timing of your completion, and the time remaining on your student visa).
If you are on a bridging visa or other temporary residence visa with no restrictions on study, then you may study the Blended or 100% Online course. It depends on the conditions of your visa and you should check this with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, or seek advice from a referral below under “Will Leo Cussen help me apply for my visa?”.

I obtained my degree overseas, am I eligible for the PLT?
Yes. Any applicant whose law degree or equivalent is from outside Australia must have their qualifications for admission approved by the relevant admitting authority in that state before applying for the course.

I am an overseas practitioner, am I eligible for the PLT?
Yes. If you an overseas lawyer, you must contact the relevant admitting authority in each state to discuss any requirements for admission to the Australian legal profession. If the admitting authority requires you to complete a Practical Legal Training course, then you may apply to Leo Cussen to complete the PLT.

When is the full tuition fee due and can I pay via instalments?
You are required to pay a $500 part tuition fee within one week of acceptance of your offer to secure your position. The balance of the tuition fee is due 2 weeks prior to the Course start date.
You may pay the course fee by instalments. However, an application for permission to pay the fee by instalments must be made in writing to the Director PLT no later than two weeks before the commencement of the course.
Applicants on a Permanent Humanitarian Visa are eligible to apply for FEE-HELP.

Will Leo Cussen help me apply for my visa?
Yes. Once you are enrolled, we can issue a Confirmation of Enrolment (COE). This may enable you to apply for or extend your visa, depending on the visa type.
If you are completing your law degree in Australia on a current student visa, you can commence the Leo Cussen PLT and then apply for a new student visa based on the COE.
We can offer guidance about the course options that are best for you and you visa type. See item 3.

- Local law association for each state that may have a referral service that can put you in touch with lawyers who work in migration matters, in some cases the first 15-30 mins are free. This may vary in each state so please check.

Do I need to complete an IELTS test to be eligible for the PLT?
You are not required to take an IELTS test to enter the PLT.
