FAQs

What are the steps to becoming a lawyer?

Finish your law degree, complete PLT, get admitted and hold a practising certificate. We’ll help you every step of the way.

What is PLT?

PLT gives you hands-on experience so you’re ready for real legal work with confidence.

The PLT course is 20 weeks full-time or 30 weeks part-time. You’ll complete the same program either way.

When can I start PLT?

Most students start PLT after finishing uni, but in some jurisdictions, you may be able to start if you have one or two electives left.

What will I do in the PLT course?

You’ll work on simulated client files, develop legal skills, and complete a professional placementall designed to prepare you for practice.

Are there any exams or tests in PLT? How will I be assessed?

No traditional exams. You’ll be assessed on practical tasks and competencies that reflect real legal work.

What qualification will I receive after completing PLT?

You’ll graduate with the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP), the final step before admission.

How does professional placement work?

You’ll complete a work placement with a law firm, legal centre, or in-house team. If you can’t source one, Leo Cussen can help arrange it.

Is PLT compulsory?

Yes. Completing PLT is a mandatory step before you can be admitted as a lawyer in Australia.

What are the requirements for completing the PLT course?

You need to complete all coursework and assessments, plus your professional placement, to meet admission requirements.

Who will decide if I can be admitted as a lawyer?

Each state and territory has an admitting authority. They review your application, check your suitability, and decide when you can be admitted.

How does Leo Cussen help with admissions?

We guide you through every step of your application and our Admissions Team provides one-on-one support.

What does “fit and proper person” mean?

It means being honest, reliable, and understanding your responsibilities to clients, the court, and other lawyers.

Do I need to disclose past conduct?
