Starting a career in law can feel daunting, especially if you think a graduate program is the only way in. Here’s the good news, there’s no right way and there’s plenty of pathways into practice.
At a recent careers session, we heard first-hand tips and insights from lawyers who’ve taken different paths to becoming a lawyer and proved there is more than one way to launch your legal career.
Look Beyond the Grad Program
Graduate programs are not the only entry point. Employers across firms, community legal centres and government roles are looking for motivated grads who can show initiative and practical ability.
“I talk to employers all the time. They’re reaching out about roles for our students and grads, and I see first-hand how many opportunities there are outside the big grad programs.”
— Alex Giannopoulos, Head of Industry and Engagement, Leo Cussen
The key is being proactive, applying widely and recognising that valuable experience can come from unexpected places.
Build Experience Early
Any legal work experience is worth having. Casual paralegal work, volunteering or admin roles in law firms all count and can open doors.
“I work at Canterbury Family Law. I actually started out by taking on paralegal and admin work while I was finishing uni. That experience helped me get my foot in the door.”
— Chloe, Family Lawyer
Small steps build your confidence and give you the foundation to move into larger roles over time.
Use PLT to Bridge the Gap
Practical Legal Training (PLT) is more than a requirement for admission.
It’s a chance to learn what it’s like to be a lawyer, build essential skills and connect with peers and mentors who will be part of your professional network.
“PLT is such an important bridge between uni and practice. It gives students the practical skills they need and the confidence to step into real work.”
— Alex Giannopoulos
Be Flexible
The first role you land doesn’t need to be perfect. It’s also helpful to be open to short-term or smaller roles, as they can help build your knowledge, confidence and experience.
“I finished PLT recently and I didn’t go into a grad program. I applied for lots of different roles, and what worked for me was being flexible. I was willing to take on a smaller role to start with, and that gave me the steppingstone I needed.”
— Elin, Junior Lawyer
Define Success on Your Own Terms
Your career path doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. What matters is building experience, staying adaptable and developing skills that make you a valuable colleague and advocate.
“Our alumni are proof that you can build a rewarding career without going through a grad program. There are many ways to enter the profession.”
— Jacinta Foley, Career Advisor, Leo Cussen
