Starting PLT can feel like a big next step and it’s normal to have questions (or not even know where to start). Here are the most common questions law students ask about PLT at Leo Cussen, with clear answers to help you feel more confident about planning ahead.

When can I start my PLT

Most students start the PLT after completing uni.

However, in some jurisdictions you may be able to commence PLT if you only have one or two elective subjects left.

Do I need to finish uni before enrolling in PLT?

No. You can enrol anytime. It’s actually recommended you enrol early – ideally in the final year of your law degree – so you can secure your place in your preferred intake.

Do I need to have done the bar exam before PLT?

No. PLT is the step that comes before you apply for admission as a lawyer.

How long is the PLT course?

The PLT course is:

  • 20 weeks full time or
  • 30 weeks part time.

You’ll complete the same program either way.

And you can choose the study mode that best fits your life.

Can I do PLT if I studied overseas?

Yes, though you’ll need to have your qualifications assessed and meet Australian admission requirements.

Can I complete PLT online?

Yes. Study 100% online, undertake our blended option or in some states you can enrol into our in-person course.

What happens if I haven’t done any legal work before?

That’s totally fine. PLT is here to bridge the gap between uni and real practice.

What are immersive sessions?

You’ll attend three workshop-style sessions (10 days total). These workshops allow you to practice and demonstrate your lawyer skills.

What’s the deal with work experience/placement?

You’ll complete 15 days of placement (or 20 days in WA). You can organise your own and get support from us, or we can organise it for you at an extra cost.

Can I do my placement during the course?

Yes, many students do. As long as you commence your placement no earlier than day 1 of the course, you can complete it at a time that suits you.

When should I enrol?

The sooner the better, as many intakes fill up quickly. Enrolling early also gives you more time to plan your work, study and placement.

At Leo Cussen, you’re not just joining a course, you’re joining a team where you’ll be mentored by practising lawyers, supported at every step and trained through real-world legal work. Whether you’re looking for flexibility, connection or just someone to walk you through it all, we’re here to help you launch your legal career with confidence.
