Starting Practical Legal Training (PLT) is an important step towards becoming a lawyer, and it’s natural to have questions. Here are the answers to some of the questions law students ask most often to help you plan ahead with confidence.

When can I start Practical Legal Training (PLT)?

Most students begin Practical Legal Training (PLT) after completing their law degree.

However, in some jurisdictions, you may be able to commence PLT if you have only one or two elective subjects remaining. Check the admission requirements in your state or territory before applying.

Do I need to finish university before enrolling in PLT?

No. You can enrol before completing your degree.

Many students choose to enrol during their final year of law school to secure a place in their preferred intake and give themselves more time to plan their studies and work commitments.

Do I need to complete the bar exam before PLT?

No. Practical Legal Training (PLT) is completed before you apply for admission as a lawyer.

How long does the PLT course take?

You can choose the study option that best suits your circumstances:

• 20 weeks full-time
• 30 weeks part-time

You’ll complete the same program regardless of which study mode you choose.

Can I complete PLT if I studied overseas?

Yes. You’ll need to have your qualifications assessed and meet the admission requirements for the Australian jurisdiction where you intend to practise.

Can I complete PLT online?

Yes. Leo Cussen offers online, blended and, in some states, onsite study options, giving you the flexibility to choose the learning experience that best suits your needs.

What if I haven’t worked in a legal role before?

That’s completely normal.

Practical Legal Training (PLT) is designed to help you apply your legal knowledge in practical settings and develop the skills you’ll use in legal practice.

What are immersive sessions?

Immersive sessions are practical, workshop-style learning experiences where you’ll apply and demonstrate your legal skills in realistic scenarios alongside your peers and practising lawyers.

How does work placement work?

As part of Practical Legal Training (PLT), you’ll complete 15 days of work placement (or 20 days in Western Australia).

You can organise your own placement with support from Leo Cussen, or we can organise one for you for an additional fee.

Can I complete my placement during the course?

Yes. As long as your placement begins on or after the first day of your course, you can complete it at a time that suits you.

When should I enrol?

Enrolling early gives you the best chance of securing your preferred intake and allows more time to plan your study, work and placement commitments.
