Your pathway to admission

Understand the admission process, what it means to be a fit and proper person and how Leo Cussen supports you every step of the way.

Completing Practical Legal Training (PLT) is a major milestone, but there’s one more important step before becoming a lawyer – admission. Here’s what the admission process involves, what admitting authorities look for and how Leo Cussen supports you along the way.

The steps to becoming a lawyer

To become a lawyer in Australia, you’ll need to:

  1. Complete a recognised law degree
  2. Complete Practical Legal Training (PLT)
  3. Be admitted to the legal profession

Once admitted, you’ll also need to hold a practising certificate issued by the relevant admitting authority before you can practise law.

At Leo Cussen, our support doesn’t end when you complete PLT. Our experienced team provides personalised guidance throughout the admission process, helping you prepare your application with confidence.

What does “fit and proper person” mean?

Before you’re admitted, you’ll need to demonstrate that you’re a fit and proper person to join the legal profession.

This means showing that you understand the professional responsibilities expected of a lawyer, including honesty, integrity, candour and your duties to the court, clients and the profession.

Disclosing past conduct

When you apply for admission, you’re required to disclose any matters that may be relevant to your suitability.

This may include:

  • Criminal convictions
  • Academic misconduct
  • Financial matters, including unpaid fines
  • Other conduct that may be relevant to your application

Making full and accurate disclosures is an important part of the admission process. Where relevant, you’ll also have the opportunity to explain the circumstances and demonstrate the insight and reflection you’ve developed.

Preparing your admission application

Admission requirements can vary between jurisdictions and the application process can seem complex.

Preparing your application carefully from the outset can help avoid unnecessary delays and ensure you’ve provided the information required by the admitting authority.

As a Leo Cussen PLT student, you’ll have access to experienced staff who can answer your questions, provide guidance on your application and support you throughout the admission process.

Support beyond PLT

From enrolment through to admission, we’re here to support you at every stage of your legal career.

When the day finally arrives, many of our lawyer mentors are proud to move their students’ admissions in court – a milestone that reflects the relationships built throughout the PLT program and the beginning of your legal career.
