Getting ready for PLT? Hear from those who’ve done it
Hear from recent graduates about the mentoring, practical experience and support that shaped their PLT experience.
Practical Legal Training (PLT) is an important step towards becoming a lawyer. But what is the experience actually like?
We heard from recent graduates about their PLT experience at Leo Cussen. From supportive mentors to practical skills and real-world experience, here’s what they had to say.
1. Mentors who make a difference
Having an experienced mentor in your corner can make a big difference during PLT. Graduates consistently highlighted the guidance, knowledge and support they received from their mentors throughout the program.
Having someone experienced to learn from, ask questions and turn to can help you build confidence as you develop your practical legal skills.
Awesome mentors - actual relevant advice and guidance.
Best mentor, best support, best class. I would 100% recommend!
2. Practical skills you can take with you
PLT is where what you’ve learned in law school starts to become practical. Through activities and tasks that reflect legal practice, you can develop relevant skills and experience before entering the profession.
For our graduates, this practical approach helped bridge the gap between studying law and putting their knowledge into practice.
The activities and tasks felt very real world accurate. I feel prepared to enter the legal profession.
It was excellent to gain relevant practical legal skills during the PLT course alongside experienced mentors.
3. Feedback that helps you improve
Practical experience becomes even more valuable when you have the opportunity to learn from it. Throughout PLT, personalised feedback helps you understand where you’re doing well and where you can continue to develop.
Graduates highlighted how this feedback helped them strengthen practical skills they could then take into placement and the profession.
I enjoyed writing and receiving feedback on my writing. I feel like Leo Cussen really helped me develop my writing skills and made it not only concise but also effective.
4. Exposure to the real legal world
PLT is also an opportunity to bridge the gap between university and legal practice. Through practical experience, placement and opportunities to meet others in the profession, you can start getting a feel for the legal world before taking your next step.
Graduates highlighted both the real-world exposure and professional connections they gained along the way.
Connecting with good people and getting good exposure to the real legal world.
Great real world experience both academically and practically! Good networking opportunities too.

Together, these experiences can help you make the transition from studying law to putting your knowledge into practice.
