PLT

5 min read

You’re almost at the end of your law degree, but you still have one or two subjects to complete. Do you need to wait until they’re finished before starting Practical Legal Training (PLT)?

Not necessarily. Concurrent study may allow you to start PLT while completing your final university subjects, helping you get started on the next stage of your legal career sooner.

What is concurrent study?

Concurrent study means completing your final law degree subjects at the same time as your PLT.

If you’re nearing the end of your LLB or JD, this may mean you don’t have to wait until your degree is completely finished before starting PLT.

Could I be eligible for concurrent study?

Generally, concurrent study may be an option if:

  • you have no more than two academic subjects remaining in your degree or double degree
  • neither of your remaining subjects is a Priestley 11 admission requirement
  • you’re already enrolled in your final subjects and will complete them while undertaking PLT

You’ll need approval from the relevant admitting authority, with requirements varying depending on the state or territory where you plan to be admitted.

What do I need to do?

Depending on where you plan to be admitted, you may need approval from the relevant admitting authority to start PLT before completing your law degree.

There can be important differences between jurisdictions, including when approval needs to be obtained and what information you need to provide.

Could concurrent study be right for you?

If you’re close to finishing your law degree, it’s worth finding out whether concurrent study is available to you.

Starting PLT while completing your final subjects could allow you to begin developing practical legal skills without waiting for your final university subjects to finish.

You’ll be completing university and PLT at the same time, so it’s also important to consider your workload and whether concurrent study is manageable for your circumstances.
