PLT

Starting Practical Legal Training (PLT) is an exciting step towards becoming a lawyer. If you’ve recently enrolled, you might be wondering what happens next and how to prepare for your first day.

The good news is that you don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. At Leo Cussen, we’ll guide you through every stage of your PLT program so you can focus on developing the practical skills and capability you’ll use throughout your legal career.

Your enrolment is confirmed

Once you’ve enrolled, your place in the program is secured. If there are any outstanding documents, such as your final academic transcript, our enrolments team will let you know what we need before your intake begins.

In the week leading up to your start date, you’ll also receive access to our online learning platform so you can familiarise yourself with the program before day one.

No pre-reading required

Unlike university, there’s no long reading list before you begin PLT.

From your first day, you’ll step into a simulated law firm environment where you’ll learn by doing. You’ll work on realistic legal matters with the support of your lawyer mentor, developing practical skills as you progress through the program.

You’ll learn through real legal work

Your PLT is designed to reflect the work lawyers do every day.

Throughout the program, you’ll complete five practical rotations covering different aspects of legal practice. You’ll work on realistic client matters, prepare legal documents, conduct research, negotiate with other students and develop advocacy and communication skills in a supportive learning environment.

Rather than memorising theory, you’ll build capability by applying your legal knowledge to realistic legal scenarios.

Immersive workshops build practical skills

During your PLT, you’ll participate in immersive workshops where you’ll develop and demonstrate key lawyer skills.

These workshops focus on areas such as client interviewing, negotiation, advocacy and professional communication, helping you build the confidence and practical capability needed for legal practice.

Professional placement

As part of your PLT, you’ll complete a 15-day professional placement (20 days in WA).

You can choose to organise your own placement with support from our team, or have Leo Cussen arrange one through our extensive legal network. Placements are available across Australia in a range of legal workplaces, including law firms, government departments, community legal centres and in-house legal teams.

Dress like a professional

If you’re attending onsite sessions or immersive workshops, business attire is recommended. It’s a great opportunity to begin developing the professional habits and presentation expected throughout your legal career.

Support is always available

Starting something new naturally comes with questions, but you won’t be navigating PLT alone.

From enrolment through to admission, our dedicated team is here to support you. Whether you need help understanding the program, organising your placement or preparing for what’s next, we’re only a phone call or email away.

Ready to begin

PLT is where you’ll start putting your legal knowledge into practice. Through real-world learning, personalised support and guidance from experienced lawyer mentors, you’ll develop the skills, capability and confidence to take the next step towards admission and your legal career.
