Mentor and Lawyer
At Leo Cussen
Lawrie is a Mentor in Practical Legal Training, working with trainees in the online course, and shares topic responsibility with Garry Mann for the Civil Litigation practice topic. As part of his role, Lawrie teaches in small group sessions with trainees in the intensive foundation skills module at the commencement of the course.
Before Leo Cussen
After admission to the legal profession, Lawrie practised as a barrister at the Victorian Bar, primarily in civil litigation, personal injury law and family law. Lawrie then moved to work as a solicitor in a law firm dealing with the same areas of law. Subsequently, he worked at the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) as a Fidelity Fund Claim Investigator, and later as Manager of the Fidelity Fund Claims Department. In his work at the LIV, Lawrie liaised regularly with the Victoria Police Major Fraud Squad.
Lawrie has also worked as a volunteer lawyer in a Community Legal Centre and as a casual lecturer at Melbourne University Law School.
He also had a pre-law career, which included working as a small business proprietor and in the wholesale travel business.
Lawrie has been chair of a kindergarten unincorporated association, a member of the Parent Management Committee of his children’s school and a member of Rotary International.
Lawrie’s special professional interests are fraud investigation, trust accounts and audit tracing as well as civil litigation practice and his teaching. He enjoys his role as mentor in the online PLT program and in particular finds satisfaction in guiding the practical training of law graduates and assisting them in their transition from student to legal professional.
