At Leo Cussen

John is a mentor in Practical Legal Training, working with trainees in the online course. As part of his role, John teaches in small group sessions with trainees in the intensive foundation skills modules at the commencement of the course.


Before Leo Cussen

John was a solicitor at Victoria Legal Aid, practising in the areas of immigration, mental health, judicial and administrative review of decisions, infringements court, guardianship and administration, civil law, social security prosecutions and criminal law in both State and Federal jurisdictions. He also has experience in the management of staff and teams as a Section Head of the Human Rights and Civil Law Service at Victoria Legal Aid.

John has been a full-time member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal and Administrative Appeals Tribunal undertaking merits review of Commonwealth decisions in the areas of social security, family assistance and child support and undertaking mediation and case appraisal in these jurisdictions.

He is currently a part-time member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and has a strong background in administrative law.



John is a current member of the board of Springvale Monash Legal Service and a member of the Council of Australasian Tribunals (COAT), Australian Institute of Administrative Law Inc. and the Law Institute of Victoria.


Achievements/Special Interests

He has been a volunteer supervisor at Springvale Monash Legal Service.

He is a contributing author to the Springvale Legal Practice Manual and has presented seminars and workshops in administrative law and social security.

He has a strong interest in the education and mentoring of law students and law graduates.
Outside work, he is a keen cyclist and runner.
