Law is such a rewarding and exciting career pathThe transition from law school tjunior practice can throw a range of new challenges and one of the best things available during this time is peer support. In this article, we discuss why we value peer support and the benefits you can expect during PLT.

At university, you might have a particular lecturer who is always responsive to your queries. In the workplace you might have a great boss who is able to find time to provide clear, regular, coaching on the job. But what happens in-between?

One of the most important aspects of the Leo PLT is the role of your mentor: gaining regular feedback from an experienced professional in a safe and supportive environment. But what does this support look like in PLT and why is it important?

During your PLT, in the Leo Cussen simulated practice model, our skilled Lawyer Mentors arm you with the information and practical skills to take into the junior years of practice, giving you feedback all along the way.

In this short clip, our Director of PLT Madeleine Dupuche speaks about the value of a Mentor to guide you through PLT and the many benefits that come from that relationship. What better way to learn than with a skilled and supportive Lawyer Mentor:

“The best way to learn to do something is to be coached by an expert in that thing”.

The graduate/mentor relationship gives you the support needed to excel in your learning. Working in small groups with your mentor, you can expect to:

  • collaborate with senior professionals.
  • learn from the wisdom of legal practitioners.
  • try and test new skills with the benefit of valuable feedback in a safe environment.

Madeleine explains,

At the heart of everything that we do in our Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is mentoring. That is because we think the best way to learn to do something new is to be coached by an expert in that thing. For this reason, all the students in our programs worked closely in small groups with their Lawyer Mentor

At Leo Cussen, the mentors are carefully selected to do this work. They are passionate about helping you become ready for what you will experience when you get into practice so that you are confident in the work that you need to do once you are working as a lawyer

All our mentors are dedicated, knowledgeable, with significant legal experience and all hold current legal practicing certificates. The best part is that they are warm and approachable! You can meet some in these recent articles and clips, Julie Anderson (WA) and Craig Collins (ACT).

Getting into law and completing your qualifications is competitive and takes hard work. But our mentors are here to support you, challenge you and set you up to be the best version of a practitioner you can be. The best part is that we have lots of fun together as a team and we want you to have fun learning to be the best junior lawyer you can be.
